About the ISO 9001:2026 Revision

As your trusted certification partner, we want to keep you informed and empowered. The ISO 9001 standard, the cornerstone of quality management systems around the globe, is undergoing a significant revision, with the updated version expected to be published in September 2026.

Whether you’re currently certified to ISO 9001:2015 or planning to pursue certification, it’s crucial to understand what’s changing and how your small business can begin preparing today.

Why This ISO 9001 Revision Matters to Small Businesses

For small businesses, ISO 9001 has long been more than a compliance requirement—it’s a proven framework for enhancing operations, minimizing errors, and building customer trust. The 2026 revision reflects the evolving landscape of business: digital innovation, emerging risks, and growing expectations for ethical conduct.

These updates are part of ISO’s routine review cycle, ensuring the standard continues to serve as a relevant, forward-looking guide for organizations worldwide—including yours.

What Changes Can You Expect from the ISO 9001:2015 version to ISO 9001:2026?

While the final content is still under development, several key areas have already emerged as likely focal points:

  • Expanded Risk Management: Expect deeper guidance on identifying and mitigating risks, including those related to your reputation and supply chain—areas especially relevant to growing small businesses.
  • Ethical and Responsible Practices: New language may require clearer demonstrations of integrity and alignment with stakeholder expectations.
  • Digital Technology Integration: The revision is likely to recognize the increasing use of automation, artificial intelligence, and digital decision-making tools—modern realities even small enterprises are now embracing.
  • Customer Journey Focus: Enhancements may shift focus from customer satisfaction alone to the entire customer experience, from first contact to long-term retention.
  • Service Sector Clarity: Service-oriented small businesses may find improved applicability and guidance tailored to non-manufacturing environments.

Importantly, the core structure of ISO 9001 will remain intact, but organizations will need to assess and potentially update their documentation, training, and internal processes to remain compliant.

What’s Happening Behind the Scenes?

Initially, ISO chose not to revise ISO 9001:2015 based on user feedback in 2020. However, renewed discussion and a subsequent majority vote in 2023 reversed that decision, officially launching the revision process.

Though the first draft was rejected, work is progressing. A second draft is being developed externally, with the Draft International Standard (DIS) expected by June 2025. This will offer the first comprehensive view of the proposed updates.

What Does This Mean for Your Business?

ISO 9001:2015 will remain valid during a three-year transition period following the 2026 release, likely making it effective until 2029. But we encourage you not to wait. Early preparation reduces the burden and can uncover opportunities for improvement.

Here’s how you can start now:

  • Reinforce Your Current System: Make sure your quality management system aligns with ISO 9001:2015 requirements—solid foundations make transitions easier.

Important Note on Climate Change Amendments

In the meantime, don’t overlook the climate change-related amendments already in effect. Two updates have been added to ISO 9001:2015:

  • Clause 4.1 now includes the statement: “The organization shall determine whether climate change is a relevant issue.”
  • Clause 4.2 includes: “NOTE: Relevant interested parties can have requirements related to climate change.”

These updates reflect a broader move toward sustainability and stakeholder awareness—topics that will continue to influence future ISO standards.
