ISO 9001:2026 Is Published: What Certified Companies Need to Know

by Stephanie Kline | Sep 16, 2026

ISO 9001:2026 has officially been published.

On September 16, 2026, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published the latest edition of ISO 9001.

It is the world’s most widely used quality management system standard. ISO 9001:2026 is the latest version of the ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS) standard.

It replaces ISO 9001:2015.

For businesses that are currently ISO 9001 certified, the publication is an important milestone—but it does not mean your existing ISO 9001:2015 certification suddenly becomes invalid.

Organizations will have time to transition their certification to the new edition. Certification Bodies like CertFast will support certified customers with information regarding the transition.

Here’s what businesses need to know now.

ISO 9001:2026 Was Published September 16, 2026

ISO 9001 is used by over one million organizations worldwide. It provides a framework to establish and maintain an effective Quality Management System.

ISO published the previous edition, ISO 9001:2015, more than a decade ago. The new ISO 9001:2026 standard updates and clarifies requirements to reflect changes in the way organizations operate today.

According to ISO, the 2026 edition maintains the familiar ISO 9001 framework while introducing targeted updates intended to improve clarity, usability and relevance.

Among the areas highlighted in the new edition are:

  • Clearer wording and requirements
  • Increased emphasis on leadership and quality culture
  • Greater clarity regarding risks and opportunities
  • Improved alignment with other ISO management system standards
  • A new Annex A providing additional clarification of terminology and the intent of certain requirements

For organizations already certified to ISO 9001:2015, this is an update to the standard. It is not a new quality management framework.

What Does ISO 9001:2026 Publication Mean for Your Certification?

The most important message for currently certified companies is simple:

You do not need to become certified to ISO 9001:2026 immediately.

Publication of a revised ISO standard begins a transition process for the certification community. This gives certified organizations, Certification Bodies and accreditation organizations time to implement the new edition in an orderly manner.

Your existing ISO 9001:2015 certificate does not automatically become invalid simply because ISO 9001:2026 has been published.

Companies should continue maintaining their Quality Management System and completing their scheduled surveillance and recertification activities.

Your Certification Body will provide additional information about when your audits will begin using ISO 9001:2026 and what will be required to transition your certification.

ISO 9001:2026 Transition Period

Organizations certified to ISO 9001:2015 are expected to have a transition period to move their certification to ISO 9001:2026.

During this period, businesses will have an opportunity to understand the revised requirements, make applicable changes to their Quality Management System and ultimately demonstrate conformity with ISO 9001:2026 as part of the certification process.

For certified organizations, there is no need to rush into major changes. First, understand the final published requirements and the certification transition guidance.

Your Certification Body should communicate important transition information as it becomes applicable to your certification, including audit timing and certification requirements.

Will My ISO 9001:2015 Certificate Remain Valid?

Existing ISO 9001:2015 certificates remain subject to the normal rules governing certification and the established transition process.

That means organizations should continue operating and maintaining their current Quality Management System.

Businesses should keep preparing for scheduled ISO 9001 surveillance and recertification audits. Do not delay certification activities just because a new edition was released.

As transition requirements are finalized and implemented, your registrar can explain how the change to ISO 9001:2026 will fit into your upcoming certification cycle.

When Will CertFast Audit Against ISO 9001:2026?

Publication of a standard and the beginning of accredited certification audits against that standard are not necessarily the same date.

Certification Bodies must follow applicable accreditation and transition requirements before issuing accredited certificates to the new edition.

CertFast will communicate with customers as the ISO 9001:2026 certification transition process progresses and will provide information regarding when audits can be conducted against the new standard.

If you are currently certified through CertFast, watch for additional communications regarding ISO 9001:2026 and your certification.

What Should ISO 9001-Certified Companies Do Now?

For most organizations, the best immediate action is simply to become familiar with the new standard.

You do not need to rebuild your entire Quality Management System because ISO 9001:2026 has been published.

Continue maintaining your existing QMS, completing internal audits and management reviews, addressing corrective actions and preparing for your regularly scheduled certification audits.

At the same time, begin becoming familiar with the changes introduced in ISO 9001:2026 so your organization has adequate time to address them before transitioning its certification.

If your organization uses an ISO consultant, that consultant can help you interpret the new requirements and determine what changes may be appropriate within your QMS. Your Certification Body's role is different: it independently audits your management system and determines whether it conforms to the applicable ISO 9001 certification requirements.

What If My ISO 9001 Recertification Is Coming Up?

Organizations approaching an ISO 9001 recertification audit should stay in communication with their Certification Body.

The appropriate timing for transitioning to ISO 9001:2026 can depend on your certification cycle, applicable transition requirements and when Certification Bodies are authorized to conduct accredited audits against the new edition.

Do not assume that an upcoming recertification automatically means you must transition immediately to ISO 9001:2026.

CertFast can help customers understand the certification timing and audit requirements that apply to their specific certification cycle.

Considering a New ISO 9001 Registrar?

The publication of ISO 9001:2026 may also prompt some businesses to take a closer look at their current certification experience.

Your registrar is an ongoing part of maintaining ISO certification. Businesses should expect clear communication, predictable scheduling, responsive customer service and straightforward information about certification requirements.

If you're dissatisfied with your current Certification Body because of service, responsiveness, scheduling or pricing, you may also be able to transfer your ISO 9001 certification to another accredited registrar, perhaps one that is small-business friendly, such as CertFast.

Changing registrars does not necessarily mean starting the entire ISO 9001 certification process again. An eligible accredited certification can generally be transferred following the applicable certification transfer requirements.

For small and midsize businesses, choosing an ISO 9001 Certification Body that understands the needs of smaller organizations can make the certification experience simpler and easier to manage.
